Emergency schedule: 1-01

• PRIMARY HAZARD
EXPLOSIVE SUBSTANCES AND ARTICLES, WHICH MAY DETONATE EN MASSE IN A FIRE

• ASSOCIATED HAZARDS
HEAVY DEBRIS AND HIGH SPEED FRAGMENTS
POSSIBLE EVOLUTION OF TOXIC FUMES

Emergency procedures

Spillage on deck

• Of articles
Sweep or pick up articles. If the articles remain intact but appear damaged, segregate and seek advice.
• Of substances or contents of articles
Keep wet. Wash spillage overboard with copious quantities of water.

Spillage under deck

• Of articles
Sweep or pick up articles. If the articles remain intact but appear damaged, segregate and seek advice.
• Of substances or contents of articles.
Keep wet. Collect spillage where practicable using soft brushes and plastics trays, for safe disposal of the spillage and the contaminated equipment overboard.

Fire on deck

If the packages are not directly involved in the fire, then efforts should be concentrated on preventing the fire reaching the explosives. This is usually done by keeping the packages wet and using water jet from as far away as practicable to drive the fire away. If practicable remove packages that are likely to be involved. If the fire reaches the explosives evacuate the area and consider abandoning ship.

Fire under deck

Batten down; use ship's fixed fire-fighting installation. Otherwise adopt action as for "on deck".

Special equipment to be carried

Protective clothing (gloves, boots, fire-resistant coveralls, headgear with visors).
Self-contained breathing apparatus.
Non-sparking footwear (footwear which has no exposed iron or steel).
Soft brushes and plastics trays.

Remarks by UN no.

• EXPLOSIVE , BLASTING, TYPE A (UN No. 0081)
• NITROCLYCERIN, DESENSITIZED (UN No. 0143) with not less than 40%
non-volatile water-insoluble phlegmatizer, by mass.
• NITROGLYCERIN SOLUTION IN ALCOHOL (UN No. 0144) with more than 1% but
not more than 10% nitroglycerin.
Water may separate the nitroglycerin from the spillage; this nitroglycerin becomes very sensitive to shock and heat. If spillage under deck, keep it under water and seek advice for safe disposal from the shipper.

• DIETHYLENEGLYCOL DINITRATE, DESENSITIZED (UN No. 0075)
Water may separate the explosive component from spilt substance; this explosive component becomes very sensitive to shock and heat. If spillage under deck, keep it under water and seek advice from the shipper for safe disposal.
